Es war arktisch. Gerüchten zu Folge wurde beim diesjährigen FM4 Geburtstagsfest die -10°C Grenze geknackt, aber dafür lädt man doch Gratulanten wie Get Well Soon. Die wissen, wie man Herzen wärmt. Für den Rest gab es Glühwein und Gruppenkuscheln.

Dem werten Herrn Gropper (oben) war übrigens nur teilkalt. Die Heizstrahler an den Mikrofonständern drohten ihm seine Hose wegzubrennen. Dafür führte die Kälte zu Verstimmungen an den Saiten. Die Violine war gar so beleidigt, dass sie ihren Auftritt kurzfristig abgesagte und sich durch Gesangsstimmen ersetzen ließ.

Besser hatten es Garish. Die durften in einer wohlig warmen Halle auftreten, wo sie nebst einiger alter Hadern hauptsächlich Stücke des am 19.2. erscheinenden Albums “Wenn dir das meine Liebe nicht beweist” zum ersten Mal auf die große Bühne brachten. Dazu ein paar Worte von Andreas Gstettner vorab.

Von Garish wird hier in absehbarer Zeit noch mehr zu sehen und zu lesen sein. Noch voll top secret und so. Gleich im Anschluss machte sich Ezra Furman mit seinen Harpoons ans Werk. Mit “Take off your sunglasses” hatte dieser letztes Jahr einen durchaus veritablen Sommerhit und weil die Halle mitterweile schon g’steckt voll war, wie man bei uns so schirch sagt, haben sogar die Temperaturen gepasst.

Kreisky leuchten laut

Die Frage ob die Band dann tatsächlich so laut gespielt hat wie beim Soundcheck blieb unbeantwortet. Macht nichts, Blumenau hat heute ~~vermutlich~~ mit Sicherheit wichtigeres zu tun [auf sport.orf.at nachmittags noch unter 'small stories', welch Ironie], und laut genug war es wohl. Die atemberaubenden Kreisky haben gestern eine FM4 Radio Session gespielt.

“So a unplugged Scheiß” (Zitat Wenzl im Interview davor), wie ihn sich ein wenig Radio Session-erfahrener Bekannter (ohne Scheiß) erwartet hatte, wurde es jedenfalls nicht. Obwohl ich gestehen muss, dass mich das folgende Bild auf den ersten Blick an eine ebensolche Session einer Band namens Nirvana erinnerte. Aber dies nur am Rande.

Besonderheiten gab es andere. Zahlreich. Zum Beispiel eine wunderbare Adaption des Gelée Royale-Klassikers “Du leuchtest”, einer in hypnotisierendem Lärm ausufernden Liebeserklärung, später vor der Tür völlig zu Unrecht als Schnulze diffamiert.

Oder, übergeordnet und wie in den Eingangsworten von Blumenau ebenfalls erwähnt, der glasklare Sound und die daraus resultierende Möglichkeit die Textebene einmal auch live voll mitnehmen zu können. So wie es ursprünglich gedacht war. Vermutlich.

Die FM4 Radio Session mit Kreisky wird am 2.12. in der FM4 Homebase (19-22 Uhr) ausgestrahlt und dazugehörige Video ab dem gleichen Tag und für zehn weitere online bei FM4 abrufbar sein. Susi Ondrušovás Worte sind bis dahin (und wohl auch noch darüber hinaus) an dieser Stelle nachzulesen, ich will mich weiterer heute enthalten.

Weil das Aussortieren im Allgemeinen und das Herauspicken von Bildern aus Bildfolgen im Speziellen diesmal ob der ebenso großartig aussehenden wie beleuchteten Band ausgesprochen schwierig war, ist die wie immer unten verlinkte Slideshow diesmal übrigens ziemlich umfangreich ausgefallen. Ich bitte sich davon nicht abschrecken zu lassen. Großes Kino gehört entsprechend gewürdigt.

Personifizierte Entzückung und zahme Bären

Bitte betrachten Sie dieses Bild und halten Sie einen kleinen Moment inne… dankeschön. Die großen Grizzly Bear waren im Wiener WUK zu Gast und hatten die atemberaubende Annie Clark aka St. Vincent als Support mitgebracht. Welch Vergnügen!

Es war der erste Österreich-Auftritt der mittlerweile in Brooklyn, NY beheimateten St. Vincent und dieser Rahmen, ein Grizzly Bear-goutierendes und dementsprechend potentiell interessiertes – Publikum, dafür sicher kein Fehler.

Die Songwriterin und Multi-Instrumentalistin bedankte sich für den nach jeder Nummer größer werdenden Applaus – nicht nur zurückzuführen auf das konzertgesetzgemäße langsame Füllen des Saales während der Vorband wohlgemerkt – mit einer zauber- haften Darbietung, die ihr Ende in einem Duett mit Grizzly Bear Daniel Rossen fand.

Ein Stück weiter im Lehrfach Musikalische Legendenbildung ist das ehemalige Soloprojekt von Ed Droste (heute mit Gitarre, Keyboard und Gesang beschäftigt), die hoch gelobten Grizzly Bear. Von Radiohead über Paul Simon bis Beyonce, alle lieben sie.

An diesem Abend aber wollte der Funke nicht so richtig überspringen, obwohl sich das versammelte Auditorium sicher bewusst war, eine der besten Bands der Gegenwart vor sich zu haben.

Sie begannen ihr Set mit “Southern Point”, auch Opener ihres aktuellen Albums Veckatimest, das bennant ist nach einer kleinen unbewohnten Felseninsel in der Nähe von Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Sie, das sind Ed Droste (oben), Daniel Rossen (unten), Chris Taylor (noch weiter unten) und Christopher Bear am Schlagzeug, das nicht wie üblich im Hintergrund sondern direkt auf einer Linie neben den anderen Bandmitgliedern platziert war.

Geschickt wurden in weiterer Folge ältere Nummern zwischen die eingängigeren Songs von Veckatimest gemischt und diese allesamt auch nahe der Perfektion umgesetzt, aber das Knistern im Kamin, wie Kollege L’Heritier schreibt, blieb leider tatsächlich aus. Schade zwar, aber wie bereits angedeutet, gar nicht mal so schlimm.

Ein Fotografiervergnügen waren St. Vincent und Grizzly Bear sowieso beide. Einzig die Glühbirndekoration hätte ich während der – eh scho wissen – ersten drei Nummern gerne auch in voller Pracht leuchten sehen. Aber man kann ja nicht alles haben.

Massive Attack. Splitting Atoms. Live.

2003 war es, als mit “100th Window” das letzte reguläre Album von Massive Attack erschien, welches viele Kritiker – nicht ganz unberechtigt – dazu veranlasste die Band auf den absteigenden Ast zu schreiben. Gestern spielte die Band im Wiener Gasometer.

Allerdings hat die Band aus Bristol, deren Kern bestehend aus Robert “3D” Del Naja und Grant “Daddy G” Marshall live noch um eine volle Bandbesetzung inkl. zwei Schlagzeuger und stimmlicher Unterstützung von Horace Andy [oben] und Martina Topley-Bird erweitert wird, schon in den 90ern als Geburtshelfer eines Genres namens Trip-Hop einen Status erreicht, der sie ein Stück weit über die gängigen Gesetze des Marktes hebt.

Und so war es wenig verwunderlich, dass trotz sechs Jahren ohne Album und mehreren Auftritten in Österreich der Release einer EP – “Splitting the Atom”, Oktober 2009 – und die Ankündigung des fünften Massive Attack-Albums für nächstes Jahr reicht, um das Gasometer zu füllen.

“Bulletproof Love” vom aktuellen Release und “Risingson” vom bereits elf Jahre alten “Mezzanine” zeigten schon zu Beginn, wohin die Reise gehen würde. Von “Safe From Harm” über das betörende “Angel” bis zu dem neuen Stück “Psyche” waren alle Schaffensperioden vertreten.

Massive Attack sind noch immer in der Lage auf die schönste Art und Weise zu verstören. Im Frühjahr 2010 dann wieder auf Albumlänge.

Best Of Frequency 2009

It has been exactly one week, filled with a lot of work, since the FM4 Frequency Festival closed it’s gates in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 23rd 2009.

The memories of the few days full of music, hard work and a lot of fun are still very present on my side, and if you wish to wallow in reminiscences as well, I’d love to help you doing so by showing off my personal Best Of Frequency 2009.

While The Ting Tings [above] provided some very charming entertainment on this hot and sunny afternoon, Kasabian [below] – Co-Headliner of Day 1 – were my first personal highlight of the festival, making their first ever appearance on an Austrian stage.

Peter Fox [and his Stadtaffe, below] from Berlin, Germany, was a quite a worthy closer for the first night. It’s not necessarily my favorite music, but a festival is one huge party too, so it was just fine. And – photographer’s joy – the turned on the big lights.

The second day started with a memorable private audience , which made it hard to appreciate what should follow. But the very first band on the Race Stage blew these thoughts away for the time of their set. I bet you can put Dennis Lyxzén [below] and his The (International) Noise Conspiracy on any stage at any time, they will still deliver a most energetic set.

My next highlight went on stage soon after: Thursday [below] from New Brunswick, NJ. A couple years ago, I travelled to Belgium just to see them at Pukkelpop Festival.

So they used to be one of my favourite bands, with their album Full Collapse from 2001 still being in my Top 10, and it’s still a pleasure to see them live. Good memories.

After the lovely Little Boots, everybody’s favourite dandy Jarvis Cocker – wearing suit and tie on stage even at 30°C – gave one of his incredibly charming performances. And I needed a break. A break to get ready, get ready for Bloc Party.

Bloc Party and their singer/guitarist Kele Okereke are not only an amazingly powerful live band, who did not fail to deliver, Kele is pretty charming too. And he let me take a Polaroid of him [thx to the nice people at Universal].

As I have posted my love letter to Radiohead already, please allow me to just skip to the next day, the day the sun disappeared. Port O’Brien [below] provided a brilliant soundtrack for this rainy afternoon on the last day of the festival.

After quite entertaining performance by The Sounds and The Subways, another personal favourite entered the stage. The voice of Tom Smith [below] of the Editors has some magic you cannot deny. Live, as on their records.

The festivals end was approaching. Performances by MIA. [funny without intending to be, let's put it this way] and Swedish Indie super boy group Mando Diao [a performance bristeling with routine] paved the way for the very last act of what has been a 3-day-blast.

The Prodigy provided an extremely powerful performance full of 90s hits, that – combined with the heavy rainfalls – gave the festival an epic and dignified last big bang.

Everybody who knows me a little bit knows that I worship Radiohead. It’s my favourite band ever [obviously if you have a look at my last.fm stats], has given me a couple of very special moments, made me travel hundreds of kilometers and are huge source of inspiration for me. Thus, having the privilege to taking photos at their first show ever on Austrian soil has certainly be the highlight of my concert photography so-called-career. So this is no review and not objective in any kind of ways, it’s more of an ode featuring the photos I took on that very special night.

As I said, Radiohead played on Austrian soil for the very first time. That’s only half true. When I stepped out of my car and walked over the empty festival site at 11:30 in the morning, I noticed a familiar sound coming from the main stage. Very familiar. And it was not coming from a tape or a technician testing Radiohead’s guitar sound for the night. It was Radiohead. The whole band.

Me and ~20 other lucky festival working people watched, amazed. In the bright, bright sun, they soundchecked Bodysnatchers, These are my Twisted Words, The Gloaming, Videotape, (Nice Dream), Idioteque and 15 Steps. Thom danced on stage, topless. We weren’t allowed to take photos, but it wouldn’t have felt right anyway. It was our moment. Having said that, I do have a 2min video and a 5min audio. I will only share it face to face though. Only.

If you wonder why this text is in English: Reason one is Vinnie, who I met in the photo pit, who is even more passionate about the band than I am and who made my car ride to Vienna later that night ways more entertaining than it would have been alone. Reason two is Amanda from the US who I met in New Zealand and who said that she wished she could read more of the things that are going on here.

Anyway. The show they played later tonight epic, of course. The only downside was that the festival audience did not appreciate the concert as much as Radiohead and music fans and started to leave after a couple of songs. I cannot really blame them, as festival time is party time for almost everybody, but it was one heartbreaking thing to see for me. On a last note, I want to thank all the people that made this day possible and the people who shared these moments with me. You know who you are.

Hello from St. Pölten. A little teaser.

A very warm Good Morning from Frequency Festival in St. Pölten. Just a little note, what to expect here in the next few days. My feet hurt as hell, but it’s only as much hard work as it is pleasure.

I shot shows by CJ Ramone, Dúné, Glasvegas, Enter Shikari, Jet, The Ting Tings, AFE, Eagles of Death Metal, Peter Fox, The (International) Noise Conspiracy, Tomte, Thursday, Jarvis Cocker, Little Boots, Bloc Party and Radiohead. So far!

Also, I have Polaroid portraits of Kele Okereke from Bloc Party and the nice guys of Polarkreis 18. So far!

And, of course, a whole load of photos from around and about and everything.

FM4 feiert Geburtstag

Österreichs zweitbester Radiosender (ich rede von Niveau, nicht Geschmack) feiert wieder Geburtstag. Die Zahl aus dem Partyslogan ist zwar verschwunden, es ist die 14, was das Line Up allerdings angeht hat sich FM4 aber nicht lumpen lassen:

Franz Ferdinand, Deichkind, The Rakes, 1000 Robota, Puppet Mastaz, Clara Luzia, Hinterland, Schwefelgelb, Who Made Who.

Ich dachte schon Deichkind würden den Headliner machen, aber da haben gewisse Connections nach UK vermutlich nicht geschadet. All diese Bands plus eine DJ Line und eine Torte jedenfalls am 24.1.2008, traditionell im winterlichen Gelände der Arena. Außerdem Punsch. Und ich.
